West Virginia State University Enrollment and Retention |

Most WV State students need some type of financial assistance in order to enroll or stay in school. We have a variety of resources to assist you with the financial obligations of higher education. |
If you need further assistance, please contact Dr. Cantrell in the Office of Student Retention: 307 Sullivan East, 766.5158, or dcantrell@wvstateu.edu |
Note taking, test taking, reading, and studying are often more difficult than they were in high school, or it may have been a long time since you engaged in these activities. Please see Tom McClure in Sullivan 117 or call 766-3041 to take the 15 minute Study Behavior Inventory, which will provide you with a personalized score report documenting your strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement. Tom will then help you build skills with a variety of workshops designed to enhance your academic success. |

Students who receive financial aid must make "academic progress" in order to continue receiving federal/state grants and/or loans. Students who are not in compliance with the WVSU Financial Aid Academic Progress Policy are placed on conditional status for one semester, which allows them one more semester to bring their grades up before financial aid is suspended. If a student's aid is suspended, he/she will have the opportunity to file an appeal and request one more year to bring his/her grades up. If such an appeal is granted, which is not always the case, the student may be required to participate in AIP (Academic Intervention Program). Involvement in AIP means that the student must meet bi-weekly with the Director of Enrollment Management & Retention Services to discuss his/her academic history, current courses and performance, future plans, academic assistance services available, etc. Any student interested in participating in this program on a voluntary basis is encouraged to contact the Director of Student Retention directly . |
The Office of Recruitment & Retention provides academic assistance through tutoring and skill-building workshops; personal counseling; testing for learning disabilities; assistance for students with physical and/or psychiatric disabilities; multicultural programming; ombudsperson assistance for students perceiving on-campus discrimination; and peer education opportunities for students interested in social/multicultural and/or substance abuse issues. |

Because faculty and staff are critical retention agents for students, the Office of Student Enrollment Management & Retention Services requests nominations each term of employees who "go the extra mile" to help students find collegiate and/or personal success. The semester nominees are recognized with a Yellow Jacket balloon bouquet and certificate of appreciation, and the winner each term also receives a WVSU coffee mug. Each year, a committee reviews the nominations received throughout the year to select an annual award winner. This faculty or staff member receives a certificate, plaque, and free parking pass for the next academic year. Every faculty and staff member has the opportunity to help WVSU/WVSCTC students connect with the institution in a meaningful way, so that they are more likely to persist to degree completion. The Retention Connection Award is the Office of Enrollment Management & Retention Services' way of saying "thank you" to those employees who take this role very seriously and positively impact the lives of students on a regular basis. |
For more information about this program or to nominate a faculty/staff member for the award, please contact Dr. Cantrell in the Office of Student Retention at 307 Sullivan East, 766.5158, or dcantrell@wvstateu.edu. |

Completing a degree at any college or university takes keen navigation of the various requirements unique to each major/program. |
Most students do not come to college with 100% of the academic skills they need to be successful. |
